Support Jokowi's Statement, Sultan: The Attitude of Political Parties Impresses Beyond the Constitution

dpd.go.id – Vice chairman of the Indonesian House of Regional Representatives (DPD) Sultan B. Najamudin admitted that he strongly supports President Joko Widodo's statement asking political parties not to be reckless in proposing presidential candidates in the upcoming elections.

According to him, the political attitude of political parties so far seems to have surpassed the constitution which provides privileges for the presidential system. So we propose that the existence of political parties needs to be regulated in a fundamental way through the constitution of the 1945 Constitution.

"If we examine the articles in the constitution, the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia, political parties are not specifically discussed, but in scattered articles. The word 'political parties' is only four," said the young Senator from Bengkulu in his official statement on Thursday (27/10).

This shows that the constitution does not regulate important party issues, unless it is freely regulated by politicians who in fact are party elites in parliament and the government as legislators. The legal basis of political parties is more based on legislation.

"As a democratic institution, political parties should not only be controlled by certain elites with undemocratic management like corporations. Therefore, political parties must be defined firmly and clearly by the constitution as public-owned political instruments", he said.

Furthermore, the former KNPI and HIPMI activist asked President Jokowi to be willing to reform the political system and institutions in Indonesia before ending his term as president. I think the President is willing to leave a healthy political institution for the Indonesian political system as a legacy of democracy.

"The president as head of state and head of government has a political responsibility to evaluate the current existence of political party institutions. Considering the importance of the existence of political parties as democratic institutions and instruments that determine candidate leaders and the policy direction of this nation's future journey," he concluded.
