The Independence of the Political Survey Institute is Doubtful, Sultan Asks BRIN to Appear as a Community Political Reference

dpd.go.id - Vice chairman of the Indonesian House of Regional Representatives (DPD) Sultan B. Najamudin asked the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) to be active in providing references to presidential candidate figures to political parties ahead of the 2024 general election.

This was conveyed following the rise of research results from electability survey institutions for presidential candidates which are often considered not objective and raise public doubts.

"We must admit that in the process of recruiting candidates for national leaders, political parties tend to refer to the results of the figure electability survey from many survey institutions whose sources of funding are unclear. Even though the state has research institutions that should be used as a reference for political parties in determining who the candidate is president who will be carried in the election," said Sultan through his official statement on Friday (21/10).

According to him, the presidential nomination system should not develop wildly with the logic of popularity by survey institutions whose independence is questioned. The public is actually very nervous about the existence of political survey institutions that are strongly suspected of working for certain political interests.

"With the 20 percent presidential threshold, which functions as a political filter for presidential candidates, political parties should have a nomination mechanism which is then submitted to the public for later testing and evaluation. Instead of following the opinions developed by survey institutions," he stressed.

But unfortunately, said Sultan, we have not seen any role for political education from BRIN to the public, especially recommendations to political parties. Whereas BRIN should be present as the main source of political reference for all democratic stakeholders.

"Democracy with all its routines must be built on scientific mechanisms, especially in collecting and managing the flow of political information from and to the public. Therefore, the presence of an independent and professional research institution such as BRIN is a prerequisite for the presence of qualified National leadership candidates", closed the former Deputy Governor of Bengkulu.
