WONDAMA, dpd.go.id – A Senator of the Republic of Indonesia Dr. Filep Wamafma, S.H., M.Hum. held a recess agenda on Roon Island, Teluk Wondama district, West Papua Province. In the agenda, Filep met face to face with the people of Kampung Roon and discussed a number of issues.
Filep said that education is still the biggest challenge not only on Roon Island but also in Papua as a whole. He admitted that he was concerned about the condition of education in Papua which was decreasing drastically. Even the dropout rate in West Papua reaches tens of thousands.
In addition, Filep said, West Papua is also still facing the problem of a shortage of teachers at every level from SD to SMA/SMK. This issue certainly requires the attention of all parties, including the awareness of parents, local government policies and all other relevant stakeholders.
On that occasion, Filep invited the residents of Roon Island to realize the importance of education for indigenous Papuan children for a better future generation. He also hopes that there will be policies from the district/city and provincial governments in West Papua to optimally manage special autonomy funds in order to improve the quality of education in West Papua.
“Why do we have to use the Special Autonomy funds for education, because when education advances, the Papuan generation will also advance for their future. Thus, the problem of education in Papua must be considered more seriously, especially since there are funds provided. So don't let Papuan children drop out of school because they are constrained by the cost of education, "explained Filep, Wednesday (26/10/2022).
On the same occasion, Stefanus Betay expressed the residents' hope that the children of Roon Island could return to school. According to him, many children in Roon Village and its surroundings were forced to drop out of school during the Covid-19 pandemic. He hopes that there is a real solution for their children to continue their education.
Responding to this, Filep Wamafma said he would follow up and fight for the aspirations of the people of Roon Island. Filep also regrets that the island's children have dropped out of school, while the Otsus policy has provided a lot of funding, which is as much as 30 percent for education.
It is hoped that these funds will be managed and implemented in various policies to support the progress of education in Papua.
“I came all the way from Jakarta to my father and mother in Roon village and I heard and saw for myself the conditions faced by the community. So I don't want to just get reports and related agencies, but I want to go down and get accurate data," he said.
Filep said that as a member of the DPD RI, he was tasked with overseeing the implementation of laws, including the Papua Special Autonomy Law. He also hopes to absorb the aspirations of the people and make an inventory of problems related to the implementation of the Special Autonomy Law in the community. Filep will also convey aspirations and problems in the region to be forwarded to the relevant parties in order to obtain a solution.
"For that I thank you because you have conveyed the truth for me and become data for me to speak later in Jakarta," said Filep. (WRP)
