SURABAYA, dpd.go.id – The phenomenon of cases of acute kidney disease that infects children in Indonesia has received serious attention from the Chairman of the DPD RI AA LaNyalla Mahmud Mattaliti. Because, apart from the confusion of information, the Ministry of Health has not provided clear and open information.
“Especially following the withdrawal of a number of syrup drugs in children. This must be explained. List the brand or name of the drug. Because not all people are observant to see the composition of the content in the drug. There should be no information that is still unclear or unclear," said LaNyalla in Surabaya, Thursday (20/10/2022).
As an anticipation, the steps taken by the Ministry of Health to ask health facilities and health services as well as pharmacies to withdraw syrup from circulation are good. But it must also be accompanied by clear information, because some of the medicines must still be in our respective homes,” he said.
The point is that communication and message must be clear. Because the community is the main object of the policy. So they must know what products are being recalled.
The senator from East Java added that the government and the Ministry of Health should not provide fluctuating and confusing information.
Previously, the Ministry of Health had instructed the public not to take syrup for a while, as a result of a mysterious case of acute kidney disorder.
The Ministry of Health also asked health workers not to prescribe syrup drugs to patients, and pharmacies not to sell syrup drugs.
The instruction is contained in a circular letter Number SR.01.05/III/3461/2022 concerning the Obligation of Epidemiological Investigation and Reporting of Atypical Progressive Acute Kidney Injury Cases in Children.
The mysterious case of acute kidney injury (AKI) attacks children. A similar case occurred in Gambia, where dozens of children died after taking drugs containing the dangerous chemical, ethylene glycol.
The findings of the ethylene glycol compound are found in several cough medicines and paracetamol syrup. Ethylene glycol is one of three dangerous compounds/chemicals found related to the mysterious acute kidney disorder case.
The three hazardous chemicals in question are ethylene glycol/ethylene glycol (EG), diethylene glycol/diethylene glycol (DEG), and ethylene glycol butyl ether (EGBE).
The Ministry of Health noted that the number of people with mysterious acute kidney disorders reached 206 cases spread across 20 provinces in Indonesia as of Tuesday (18/10/2022).
A total of 99 of them died. The majority of patients who died were patients treated at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM), Jakarta. The mortality rate of patients treated at RSCM reaches 65 percent. (*)
