BONDOWOSO, dpd.go.id - The Chairman of the DPD RI, AA LaNyalla Mahmud Mattalitti, said that pesantren (Islamic Boarding Schools) is the most concrete institution in contributing to the nation's journey. This contribution has been made before independence, to the point of maintaining independence.
"In the pre-independence era, Islamic boarding schools were a prototype of civil society. Because, apart from living independently, Islamic boarding schools were also a solution for the surrounding community," said LaNyalla, while attending the laying of the first stone for the construction of the STAI Al-Utsmani Multipurpose Building in Jambesari, Bondowoso, Monday (24/10/2022).
LaNyalla who was present with the Professor of UIN Kiai Haji Achmad Siddiq Jember, Prof. Dr. Drs. H. Abdul Muis Tabrani MM, also provided insight into nationality.
Figures present on the occasion were the leadership of STAI Al-Ottoman, Dr. Ubaidilah Afif SPdi, MPdi, representatives of the Foundation and Family Council of Al-Ottoman Salafiyah Islamic Boarding School, lecturers, students, students and invited guests.
LaNyalla explained that in the past, Islamic boarding schools did not live from Dutch funds or compensation. But living independently from farming with the spirit of mutual cooperation between students and the surrounding community.
"Islamic boarding schools are the solution, for example, if someone is sick, ask the kiai for prayer. Some don't have rice, come to Islamic boarding schools. Some have problems, ask the kiai for advice, and so on," he explained.
The role of ulama and kiai who cared for Islamic boarding schools at that time could not be erased from the history of Indonesian independence.
"We know that October 22, 1945, which was later commemorated as Santri Day, is very historic in the context of independence. On that day, Rais Akbar Nahdlatul Ulama, Hadratus Sheikh Kiai Hasyim Asy'ari issued a Jihad Resolution in Surabaya. November 1945, which we also commemorate as Heroes' Day," said LaNyalla.
Then the role of the ulama and kiai throughout the archipelago in providing opinions and input to the Investigating Agency for Preparatory Work for Indonesian Independence, which later became the Preparatory Committee for Indonesian Independence. One of its members is Kiai Wahid Hasyim, who is the son of Kiai Hasyim Asy'ari.
"Another big role is the relentless attitude of the ulama and kiai, who, for the sake of diversity, agreed to replace and delete the clause 'Jakarta Charter' which was the opening of the 1945 Constitution, to replace it with the sentence; 'The state is based on the One Godhead'," he said. .
Even today, if we look at the analysis of Ideology, Economics, Social and Culture, according to LaNyalla, the contribution of Islamic boarding schools is still very real.
"In terms of ideology, it is clear that this country is based on divinity. This is the main domain of Islamic Boarding Schools as guardians of morals and etiquette as well as the morals of the nation's generation," he explained.
From the economic side, he added, apart from being an independent institution, Islamic boarding schools have now entered the economic space through cooperatives and businesses in several sectors. Even some Islamic boarding schools have recorded success in developing the business sector, although their business scale still needs to be expanded.
Meanwhile, from the social side, Islamic boarding schools as guardians of local wisdom values have been tested. In the midst of the incessant flow of globalization, Islamic boarding schools act as a balancer, as well as guard the morals of the nation's children.
"From a cultural perspective, Islamic boarding schools are still at the forefront of educational institutions in Indonesia," he explained.
According to LaNyalla, all of these are big and fundamental roles. Not to mention the values of etiquette and manners taught in Islamic boarding schools will be a provision for the alumni of Santri in living life in society.
With the various roles of Islamic boarding schools and ulama, LaNyalla hopes that the ulama and students will understand the thoughts of previous scholars so that they can participate in efforts to reorganize Indonesia for the better. (*)
