dpd.go.id - Vice chairman of the House of Regional Representatives (DPD) of the Republic of Indonesia Sultan B. Najamudin assessed that the request for an extension of the village head's term of office needed to be studied carefully by considering many things including the principles of democracy and proportionality.

According to him, the periodization of terms of office in Article 39 of the Village Law is quite long and lengthy when compared to the terms of office of regional heads and presidents. Where the tenure of the village head is set for 6 (six) years from the date of inauguration and can serve a maximum of 3 (three) consecutive terms or not consecutively.

"We really respect the aspirations and wishes of the village heads. Villages and village heads must be given special privileges as entities that are important in maintaining national values such as mutual cooperation and kinship," said Sultan through his official statement on Tuesday (17/01) .

The village government, said Sultan, is an extension of the country and the gateway for the community. However, in this rapidly changing modern era, village governance must be adjusted democratically, professionally, and proportionally.

"In the village development process which continues to experience ups and downs amidst sizable fiscal incentives, we consider it necessary to carry out a performance-based evaluation of the village head. It is hoped that this will create a professional, efficient and effective, open, and accountable Village Government that is ultimately eventually it will accelerate village development," suggested the former Deputy Governor of Bengkulu.

Therefore, said Sultan, the desire to serve for 9 (nine) years in each period needs to be studied carefully and wisely. The village must be a role model for building substantial democracy for government at all levels.

It is known that thousands of village heads throughout Indonesia staged demonstrations in front of the DPR RI Building, Jakarta, Tuesday (17/1). They demanded an extension of the village head's tenure from six years to nine years.

The village heads asked the DPR to revise the term of office stipulated in Law Number 6 of 2014 concerning Villages. (*)
