dpd.go.id – Vice Chairman of the House of Regional Representatives (DPD) RI Sultan B. Najamudin encouraged the government to respond to the ban on nickel downstreaming by the world trade organization (WTO) with a preventive diplomacy approach with European Union countries.
This was conveyed by Sultan so that the lawsuit between the European Union and Indonesia at the WTO does not expand and lead to conflicts that affect the trade relations of the two countries. I think the Government needs to specifically invite European Union countries to collaborate in developing a nickel downstreaming scheme according to the standards they have in Indonesia.
"We appreciate the efforts of the Government of Indonesia to openly show its resistance to the European Union's lawsuit over Indonesia's Nickel downstreaming policy. But of course all countries have interests and needs for energy and food amid the current global economic crisis," said the former chairman of HIPMI Bengkulu through the official statement was on Friday (13/01).
According to him, the government does not need to fight against the WTO decision which won the European Union lawsuit. Because in the current trade context, Indonesia has a better bargaining position than European Union countries.
"Our trade balance continues to increase and is positive compared to Europe. Indonesia's coal exports to Europe until December 2022 are estimated to reach 6.6 million tons. This amount even exceeds the record for the highest export in 2012," emphasized the Sultan.
The government, said the former chairman of HIPMI Bengkulu, only needs to re-evaluate trade relations with Europe. And asked them to urge the WTO to review international trade rules that are detrimental to major nickel and other mineral producing countries such as Indonesia.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) is not playing games against the European Union in the World Trade Organization (WTO). Despite the defeat, he ordered his ministers to appeal.
As is known, the European Union's lawsuit at the WTO against Indonesia over the government's policy of banning the export of nickel ore abroad. However, President Jokowi said the export ban policy sparked the European Union to sue Indonesia to the WTO. The European Union won the lawsuit. (*)
