dpd.go.id - Vice chairman of the House of Regional Representatives (DPD) RI Sultan B. Najamudin asked the Government to improve the effectiveness of targeting scholarship recipients to the lower middle class amid the threat of an autonomous and profit-oriented national higher education system.

This was conveyed by Sultan following the story of a Yogyakarta State University (UNY) student with the initials (R) who died as a result of being pressured by the nominal Single Tuition Fee (UKT) on her campus which went viral on social media Twitter by the account @rgantas, the story was shared via a thread on Wednesday (11/1).

"We and all of us really regret this sad incident in the midst of an increase in the allocation of scholarship endowments given by the government to Indonesia's younger generation through several scholarship programs. This means that we need to review the scholarship distribution system, including the higher education system, which is considered to have contributed to the increase in the current burden of financing higher education", said the Sultan through his official statement on Saturday (14/01).

According to him, the current government scholarship distribution system often does not cover the educational needs of children who live in remote villages. As a result, we often find many regional and village children who continue their tertiary education only with their own courage and hard work.

"We hope that the experience of the death of a UNY student will be the last tragedy that deserves serious attention from the government. So that various types of scholarships, both LPDP and Bidik Misi, must be distributed fairly according to their needs, especially for the children of farmers from villages who have a strong desire to study and change their lives. the fate of his family," emphasized the former Deputy Governor of Bengkulu.

Furthermore, Sultan specifically asked the government to provide full compensation and scholarships to the younger brother of victim R. Because according to information we know through uploads of his college colleagues on the @rgantas account that R once said, if in the end he could not continue his studies. He wants to work so he can send his sister to college. He wanted to make his sister's dream comes true. (*)
