SURABAYA, dpd.go.id - The high poverty rate in Surabaya, East Java, is a serious concern for the Chairman of DPD RI, AA LaNyalla Mahmud Mattalitti. According to him, this must be overcome, one of which is through training for vulnerable groups or poor families.
This was conveyed by LaNyalla after the Surabaya City Social Service put up stickers that read 'Poor Families', to around 75,069 families receiving social assistance. This number includes 219,427 people. Meanwhile, the number of poor people in East Java in March 2022 reached 4.181 million people.
Even though this figure has decreased from the previous year, LaNyalla hopes that poverty will be the focus of handling, due to the potential for a global recession.
"Poverty must be a serious concern for the local government. The current figure is still quite high, I hope it can be kept down so that the level of social welfare will also increase," said LaNyalla who was in recess in East Java, Thursday (29/12/2022).
LaNyalla also said the government needed to work even harder to reduce this number.
"The government needs to encourage families who are classified as poor to continue to work harder so that this group has efforts to improve their economy," he explained.
The senator from East Java explained that there were several steps to increase the welfare of families classified as poor.
"For example by providing training in sewing skills, training in making accessories, or making other handicrafts," he said.
Not only that, LaNyalla also encourages poor families to open businesses with the skills provided earlier.
"So it's not just providing training, but there must be follow-up. And this must be the commitment of the government and poor families," said the man who once served as the general chairman of PSSI.(*)
